Late Eagle Lifts Wang into Top 20 at NCAA Stanford Regional

STANFORD, Calif. -- A round of 71 by Vanessa Wang highlighted Cal Poly's performance on the first day of competition in the NCAA Stanford Regional women's golf tournament Monday on the Stanford Golf Course.
Wang matched par on the 6,291-yard layout with an eagle, one birdie, one bogey and a double-bogey. She was two over par when she eagled the 490-yard, par-5 seventh hole (her 16th hole of the day) to pull even.
Wang is tied for 17th place with eight other golfers at even par, four strokes off the lead set by a trio of golfers at four under. They are Sadie Englemann of Stanford, Maja Stark of Oklahoma State and Irene Kim of Northwestern.
Competing in an NCAA regional for the second time in program history, Cal Poly carded a four-person 305 total for 17th place.
A total of 18 teams and five individuals are competing for berths in the NCAA Division I National Championship, slated for May 21-26 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz. The low six teams and the three low individuals not on those teams from each of the four regionals qualify for the nationals.
Mustang Elizabeth Scholtes carded a 77 and is tied for 68th place while Nicole Neale checked in with a 78 and is tied for 75th place. Caroline Cantlay and Madi Daniel both finished with 79s and are tied for 81st place.
Playing on its home course, Stanford leads the team standings with a 12-under-par 272 total, 10 strokes ahead of Virginia Tech (282). Top-seeded Wake Forest is third at 286.
Wang was one of six golfers to post eagles in the first round. She was third in par-5 scoring at three under par and her 14 pars were tied for fourth place.
Second round will be played Tuesday with Cal Poly to tee off with Pepperdine and Navy from the 10th hole from 9:50 to 10:30 a.m. The final round is set for Wednesday morning.
