Rogers Collects 100th Career Win as No. 6 Mustangs Win Pair of Matches Saturday

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Sixth-year head coach Todd Rogers collected the 100th win of his career Saturday as the Cal Poly beach volleyball team beat both Santa Clara and Saint Mary's at Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex to wrap up the regular season.
The No. 6 Mustangs (19-8) started the day by beating the Broncos 5-0 before taking down the Gaels 3-2. The win over Santa Clara earned Rogers his 100th career victory as a head coach, all at Cal Poly.
In the first match of the day against Santa Clara, the Mustangs won all five matches in straight sets. The No. 2 pair of grad transfer Amy Ozee and redshirt sophomore Jayelin Lombard got things started with a 21-13, 21-16 win over Julia Sangiacomo and Michelle Shaffer.
The No. 4 pair of freshman Piper Naess and redshirt sophomore Eleonore Johansen then took down Gretchen Reinert and Kat Georgiadis 21-16, 21-11 to put Cal Poly ahead 2-0. Naess and Johansen are now 1-1 in matches together this season.
At the No. 5 spot, the duo of redshirt sophomores Delaney Peranich and Kalee Graff won their third match of the season together after beating Elena Radeff and Alexia Gallegos 21-11, 21-12.
The No. 1 pairing of redshirt senior Emily Sonny and redshirt junior Macy Gordon kept their streak going after getting a dominant 21-7, 21-12 win over Kathryn Decker and Claire Doud.
The 5-0 win was then completed after the No. 3 duo of redshirt juniors Tia Miric and Mariah Whalen won their match over Alex Anthony and Jordan Bennett 21-13, 21-8.
The win for the Mustangs was the first in program history over Santa Clara.

A short time later, Cal Poly was back on the sand at Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex to take on Saint Mary's.
The Gaels took the first point of the match after getting a win at the No. 4 spot. Ozee and Lombard tied things up after getting a 21-15, 21-18 win over Alexsa Parker and Hawley Harrer at the No. 2 spot. Ozee and Lombard are now 18-8 together this season and have won their last five matches.
At the No. 1 spot, Gordon and Sonny gave the Mustangs a 2-1 lead after they won their match over Chandler Cowell and Elena Baka 21-19, 21-13. They are now a team-leading 20-6 together this season and have also won their last five matches.
A short while later, Miric and Whalen clinched the dual for Cal Poly after grinding out a 21-16, 22-20 win over Jasmin Suarez and Sienna Young. Miric and Whalen are now 10-8 together this season.
Cal Poly finishes the 2021 season with a 10-3 record at home in its first full season playing at Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex.
With the regular season now over, the Mustangs will get ready to compete in the Big West Tournament which will take place April 30-May 1 in Long Beach where they will be the No. 1 seed. Cal Poly is still the defending Big West champions after winning its first title in 2019.
