No. 6 Mustangs Open Big West Tournament With 5-0 Win Over CSU Bakersfield Friday

LONG BEACH, Calif. — The top-seeded Cal Poly beach volleyball team opened the Big West Tournament with a 5-0 win over CSU Bakersfield Friday at Rosie's Dog Beach in Long Beach to advance to the semifinals of the double-elimination tournament.
The win was the No. 6 Mustangs' (20-8) 20th win of the year. It is the third time in program history they have reached at least 20 wins in a season.
Cal Poly's No. 5 pair of redshirt sophomore Vanessa Roscoe and redshirt freshman Josie Ulrich started things off by winning their match in straight sets over Seleisa Elisaia and Alaina Gendale 21-17, 21-12 to improve their record together to 11-9 this year.
The No. 4 duo of redshirt sophomore Eleonore Johansen and freshman Sam Strah followed suit a short time later with a 21-16, 21-15 win over Hayley McCluskey and Mapuhola Sekona. They are now 10-5 together on the season.
The match was later clinched by the No. 3 pairing of redshirt juniors Tia Miric and Mariah Whalen after they won in straight sets over Anna Unke and Brooke Boiseau 21-9, 21-19 to push their record together to 11-8 on the year.
The Mustangs' No. 1 pair of redshirt senior Emily Sonny and redshirt junior Macy Gordon then won their sixth match in a row after beating Cameron Solberg and Milica Vukobrat in three sets 21-17, 19-21, 15-6. They are now a team-leading 21-6 together this season.
The 5-0 victory was rounded out by the No. 2 duo of redshirt sophomore Jayelin Lombard and grad transfer Amy Ozee after they beat Emily Hansen and Hana Makonova in three-set comeback fashion 23-25, 24-22, 17-15. They are now 19-8 together and are also on a six match winning streak.
Cal Poly will now take on No. 15 Hawai'i on Saturday at 10 a.m. If the Mustangs win, they will advance to the championship match at 1 p.m. Cal Poly beat the Rainbow Wahine in three of the four matches the two teams played each other this season.
