Cal Poly Second in Big West Finals as Cantlay, Neale Shoot 70s

YORBA LINDA, Calif. -- Four of Cal Poly's five golfers competing in the 2021 Big West Conference Women's Golf Championship are in the top seven after one round of play Monday at the Yorba Linda Country Club.
UC Irvine, however, holds a two-stroke advantage over the Mustangs in the team standings because Anteater Megan Yang fired a blistering seven-under-par 65 for a five-stroke lead in the individual standings.
Mustangs Nicole Neale and Caroline Cantlay are tied for second place as both carded two-under-par rounds of 70 on the 6,235-yard, par-72 course while Elizabeth Scholtes and Vanessa Wang share seventh place with 72s.
Coach Sofie Aagaard's Mustangs carded a four-person four-under-par 284 total, equalling the team's season-low round for the year and the fifth-best round in program history. UC Irvine did two better with a six-under-par 282 aggregate.
Two-time defending conference champion Long Beach State is third with a three-over-par 291.
Cantlay recorded three birdies and a bogey while Neale carded five birdies and a trio of bogeys. Neale posted her fourth round of 70 this year, her career best, while Cantlay earned her third career 70 to go along with four rounds in the 60s.
Scholtes matched par with one birdie, one bogey and 16 pars, which leads the field, while Wang notched two birdies, a pair of bogeys and 14 pars.
Holland Schourds of Long Beach State also posted a 70 to join Cantlay and Neale in second place while Monica Johnson of Hawai'i and Sienna Lyford of UC Irvine share fifth place with 71s.
Cantlay, Wang and Neale share fifth place in par-3 scoring at even par while Scholtes is second in par-4 scoring at one under par. Cantlay and Neale are in a group tied for second in par-5 scoring at two under par.
Neale's five birdies is second only to the eight posted by Yang. Cantlay and Wang both recorded 14 pars, tied for No. 3.
Cal Poly is seeking its second Big West team title in program history, claiming its first in 2017.
Second round will be played Tuesday with the final round slated for Wednesday.
