YORBA LINDA, Calif. -- One stroke separates first-place UC Irvine and No. 2 Cal Poly entering the final round of the 2021 Big West Conference Women's Golf Championship at the Yorba Linda Country Club.
Coach Sofie Aagaard's Mustangs shaved one stroke off the Anteaters' first-round lead Tuesday with a four-person 294 total on the 6,235-yard, par-72 course.
With its 295 total, UC Irvine leads the team standings with a one-over-par 577 aggregate, followed by Cal Poly at 578 and two-time defending conference champion Long Beach State at 581.
The final round tees off Wednesday with Cal Poly, UC Irvine and Long Beach State paired against each other at 8:20 a.m.
"We have put ourselves in a good position for the final round to battle for the trophy," said Aagaard.
Caroline Cantlay turned in another steady round Tuesday, following her first-round 70 with a par 72 that featured one birdie, one bogey and 16 pars. Her 30 pars for 36 holes is first in the field of 45 golfers.
Cantlay is second on the leaderboard, four shots behind front-runner Megan Yang of UC Irvine, who opened with a seven-under 65 Monday and added a 73 Tuesday for a six-under-par 138 total, four strokes ahead of Cantlay.
Third place is shared by Hannah Sun of UC Davis and Holland Shourds of Long Beach State with one-under-par 143 totals.
Cal Poly's Vanessa Wang moved up two spots into a tie for fifth place with two other golfers at 145, adding a 73 to her 72 on Monday. Wang posted three birdies and four bogeys Tuesday.
Nicole Neale and Elizabeth Scholtes share 16th place with five other golfers, all with four-over-par 148 totals. Neale recorded a 78 and Scholtes a 76 in the second round.
Madi Daniel notched a 73 with three birdies and four bogeys after carding an 86 Monday, jumping seven spots into 37th place with her 159 total.
"We have so far played two solid rounds at Yorba Linda," said Aagaard. "Yesterday was very good with a four-under-par team score. We made a good amount of birdies as we saw the putts drop. Today the greens felt slower and we were leaving a few too many putts short or to the side of the hole.
"A decent day all in all," Aagaard added.
Cal Poly garnered 10 birdies Tuesday, one less than in Monday's round of 284, the fifth-best in program history for 18 holes.
Wang is second in par-3 scoring at one under par while Neale is fifth at even par. Cantlay is second in par-4 scoring at one under par while Wang and Cantlay are tied for fourth in par-5 scoring at two under par.
Neale's six birdies over 36 holes is No. 7.
