Cal Poly Finishes 13th in PING/Arizona State Invitational

PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Despite its best round of the tournament, the Cal Poly women's golf team remained in 13th place after the final round of play in the PING/Arizona State Invitational on Sunday.
At the Papago Golf Course, Coach Sofie Aagaard's Mustangs posted a four-person five-over-par 293 total on the 6,426-yard, par-72 course, finishing with a 54-hole 32-over-par 896 aggregate.
Arizona State and Oregon shared the team title, each with two-under-par 862 totals. Michigan was third at even par.
Mustang freshman Nicole Neale carded a final-round two-under-par 70 and climbed 22 positions into a tie for 36th place with teammate Caroline Cantlay and four other golfers with six-over-par 222 totals. Neale recorded five birdies, one bogey and a double-bogey.
Cantlay posted a final-round 74.
Other scoring golfers for Cal Poly were Vanessa Wang with a 72 for a 226 total and 55th place, Elizabeth Scholtes with a 78 for a 229 total and 64th place, and Madi Daniel with a 77 for a 233 total and 75th place.
Wang jumped 11 spots with two birdies and a pair of bogeys.
Individual champion was Kelly Sim of Northwestern with a final-round 72 and a five-under-par 211 total and a one-shot margin of victory over a quartet of golfers at four under par.
Neale finished tied for third in par-3 scoring at one under par while Daniel and Wang shared seventh place at even par.
Cal Poly will compete in the Fresno State Invitational on April 12-14 at the Copper River Country Club.
