Cal Poly’s McNulty Wins 500 Free At Thursday’s MPSF Championships

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly freshman men's swimmer Kieran McNulty (pictured) won the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation title in the 500-yard freestyle to lead the way for the Mustangs at Thursday's MPSF Championships at Anderson Aquatic Center.
McNulty's winning time in the event was 4:23.30, over three seconds ahead of the second place finisher and put him in the record books at Cal Poly as his time is the fourth-fastest in program history.
Some of McNulty's teammates also cracked the top-five in Cal Poly's record book Thursday. Sophomore Brandon Toland finished fourth in the 50 free with a time of 20.28, good for fifth-fastest in Mustang history. Sophomore Brian Wong finished ninth in the 200 IM with a time of 1:49.39, good for fifth-best in school history.
The Cal Poly men's 200 free relay team of junior Grant Brehm, freshman Sean Keegan, sophomore Ryan Iannaccone, and Toland finished in third in the event with a time of 1:20.44, just missing breaking the school record time of 1:20.35.
On the women's side, senior Stephanie Backlund placed eighth in the 500 free with a time of 5:04.59 and sophomore Samantha Rankin placed eighth in the 200 IM with a time of 2:06.62.
In the women's 200 free relay, the Mustang quartet of senior Alyssa Kjelsberg, freshman Katie Faris, sophomore Sophie Jackson, and senior Sascha Keir finished in fifth place with a time of 1:35.99.
Through three days of competition, the Cal Poly men's team is currently in third place overall while the women's team is in fifth place
Competition continues Friday with the men's and women's 100 butterfly, 400 IM, 200 free, 100 breast, and 100 back with the women starting at 10 a.m. and the men starting at 3:30.
