Sytnik Breaks School Record In 100 Backstroke At Friday’s MPSF Championships

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly junior men's swimmer Gennady Sytnik (pictured) broke the long-standing school record in the 100-yard backstroke to highlight the Mustangs at Friday's Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships at Anderson Aquatic Center.
Sytnik finished in second place in the event with a time of 48.03, just two one-hundredths of a second off of first place. Sytnik broke Peter Kline's record of 48.25 that had stood since 2011.
Also in the men's 100 backstroke, senior Daniel Macavei fifth place time of 48.82 Friday is good for the fourth-best time in school history.
In the men's 100 butterfly, Cal Poly junior Christopher Hogan finished fourth in the event with a time of 48.59, good for third-best all-time in program history. Mustang sophomore Brian Wong placed fifth in the event with a time of 48.80, good for fifth-best in school history.
Highlighting the Cal Poly women earlier in the day was sophomore Samantha Rankin, who finished in third place in the 400 IM with a season-best time of 4:27.62. Also in that event, sophomore Kaia Anderson finished seventh with a time of 4:32.47.
In the 100 breaststroke, senior Avery Newman placed seventh with a season-best time of 1:05.07.
In the 200 free, senior Stephanie Backlund finished eighth with a season-best time of 1:53.22.
After three days of competition, the Cal Poly men's team is currently in fourth place overall and the women's team is in fifth place.
Saturday marks the final day of the Championships with the men's and women's 1,650 free, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, and 400 free relay. The women get things started at 10 a.m. and the men get going at 3:30 p.m.
