McNulty Wins Second MPSF Title At Final Day of Championships

SAN LUIS OBIPSO, Calif. — Cal Poly freshman men's swimmer Kieran McNulty (above) took home his second win of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships Saturday after taking first in the 1,650 yard (one mile) freestyle to highlight the Mustangs at the final day of the MPSF Championships at Anderson Aquatic Center.
McNulty had a winning time of 15:31.43, nearly nine seconds ahead of the second place finisher. It was his second MPSF title of the meet after he won the 500 yard free on Thursday in what was the fourth-fastest time in school history.
His two individual titles are the most by a Mustang at the MPSF Championships since 2013.
Also in the men's 1,650 free, senior Alex Nikolaev finished in third place with a time of 15:44.62.
Sophomore Brian Wong had a fourth place finish in the men's 200 fly with a time of 1:47.51, the second-fastest time in school history.
Junior Gennady Sytnik, who Friday broke the school record in the 100 backstroke, finished fifth Saturday in the 200 back with a time of 1:47.57, the fourth-fastest time in program history. In the same event, senior Daniel Macavei came in seventh with a time of 1:48.46.
On the women's side, senior Stephanie Backlund had the highest finish on the afternoon for the Mustangs, placing third in the 1,650 free with a time of 17:33.81. Right behind her in fourth place was sophomore Kaia Anderson with a time of 17:33.90. (both pictured at right)
Senior Avery Newman finished in sixth place Saturday in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:19.21.
Overall, the Cal Poly men's team finished the MPSF Championships in fourth place while the women's team came in fifth place in head coach Phil Yoshida's first year at the helm of the program.
