Weltner Sets School 1-Meter Dive Record In Meet Against Biola Saturday

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Competing in its final home meet of the season, junior diver Joelle Weltner a school record as the Cal Poly men's and women's swimming and diving teams faced Biola University Saturday at Anderson Aquatic Center.
The Mustang men defeated Biola 193-100 while the women lost to Biola 144-151. Between the men and women, Cal Poly combined to win 21 of the 34 events.
On the men's side, junior Gennady Sytnik won two events on the day. He first won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:53.74. He later took first in the 100 back, winning it with a time of 49.19.
Also winning two events on the men's side was sophomore Brandon Toland. Toland first won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 20.64. He then won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 57.91.
On the women's side, junior diver Joelle Weltner (pictured) won both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives. She won the 1-meter with a score of 281.55, setting a new school record in the event. In the 3-meter dive, she placed first after a score of 271.85.
Also picking up wins on the men's team were freshman Kieran McNulty in the 1,650-yard (one mile) free with a time of 15:26.28, sophomore Ryan Iannaccone in the 100 free with a time of 46.37, freshman Sean Keegan in the 400 IM with a time of 4:05.75, freshman Erik Seljeseth in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:05.36, junior Christopher Hogan in the 100 fly with a time of 51.14, senior diver Noah McKinley in the 3-meter dive with a score of 334.50 which is good for the second best score in school history, sophomore Brian Wong in the 200 fly with a time of 1:51.36, sophomore diver Max Powell in the 1-meter dive with a score of 300.80 which is the third best score in the event in school history, and freshman Jimmy Butler in the 500 free with a time of 4:46.48.
Other winners on the women's side included sophomore Erin Kim in the 100 fly with a time of 58.96, junior Adelynn Peterson in the 200 fly with a time of 2:08.73, freshman Junie Leih Carlos in the 100 back with a time of 59.63, and senior Stephanie Backlund in the 500 free with a time of 8:00.01.
In the team relays, the Mustang men's squad of Sytnik, Hogan, junior Trevor Collet, and junior Grant Brehm won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:33.12.
The Cal Poly women's quartet of seniors Sascha Keir, Alyssa Kjelsberg, Emelia Piccininni, and Backlund went out together on top, winning the 400 free relay with a time of 3:34.51.
