Mustang Swimming & Diving Win 30 of 32 Events Against Fresno Pacific

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly men's and women's swimming and diving teams had a strong showing Thursday at Anderson Aquatic Center, winning 30 of the combined 32 events over Fresno Pacific University.
The Mustang women's team won all 16 of their individual and relay events as they beat FPU 151-81. The men's team won 14 of 16 events on their way to winning the dual meet 138-96.
The Cal Poly women's team had two swimmers and one diver win two individual events while the men's team also had two swimmers and one diver win two individual events.
For the Mustang women, sophomore Erin Kim won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:57.35 as well as the 50 butterfly with a time of 26.35, the fastest in the event by a Mustang this season.
Senior Avery Newman took first in the 50 breaststroke with a time of 31.93, the fastest time by a Mustang in the event this season. She also won the 100 breast with a time of 1:08.63.
The other women's double winner came from Mustang junior diver Joelle Weltner. She won the 1-meter dive with a score of 275.78, her best score in the event and good for the third highest score in program history. She also won the 3-meter dive with a score of 242.10.
Other women's individual winners on the day included sophomore Kaia Anderson (1,000 free 10:49.60), senior Sascha Keir (50 back 27.69), junior Adelynn Peterson (100 fly 59.79), sophomore Sophie Jackson (50 free 24.93), freshman Lauren Gleason (100 free 54.25), freshman Junie Leih Carlos (100 back 59.39), senior Stephanie Backlund (500 free 5:18.15), and sophomore Samantha Rankin (200 IM 2:09.86, the fastest by a Mustang this season).
In the team relays, the Cal Poly "A" team of Keir, Newman, Kim, and senior Alyssa Kjelsberg took first in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:49.59. In the 200 free relay, the Mustang "A" team of freshman Katie Faris, Gleason, Jackson, and Kjelsberg took first with a time of 1:37.99, the best time for the team this season.
For the Cal Poly men, senior Alex Nikolaev won the 1000 free with a time of 9:49.71 as well as the 500 free with a time of 4:46.00.
Junior Brandon Toland (pictured) took home first in the 50 breast with a time of 26.75, the fastest by a Mustang this season, and in the 100 free with a time of 46.60, also good for the fastest by a Cal Poly swimmer this season.
Senior diver Noah McKinley won both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives in the meet. He won the 1-meter dive with a score of 266.47 and the 3-meter with a score of 266.63.
Other winners for the Cal Poly men included freshman Kieran McNulty (200 free 1:42.69, the fastest time by a Mustang this season), junior Trevor Collett (50 back 24.01), freshman Sean Keegan (100 fly 51.70), junior Chris Hogan (100 breast 58.33), freshman Justin Mills (50 fly 21.67, the fastest time by a Mustang this season), and sophomore Brian Wong (200 IM 1:54.62, the fastest time by a Mustang this season).
In the team relays, the Mustang "A" team of Gennady Sytnik, Toland, Keegan, and junior Grant Brehm won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:33.38. In the 200 free relay, the Mustang "A" team of Brehm, Mills, senior Tony Casaccia, and Toland took first with a time of 1:24.44, the fastest by a Mustang quartet this season.
The Mustangs will next get ready to compete in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships, which are hosted by Cal Poly this year at Anderson Aquatic Center, next week Feb. 16-20. Due to COVID-19 protocols, no fans will be permitted to attend any of the days.
