Willett, Vick Combine For 35 in 53-61 Loss to Nevada Thursday

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Junior guards Maddie Willett and Maddie Vick combined to score 35 points but the Cal Poly women's basketball team fell at home Thursday morning to Nevada, 53-61.
Willett scored a season-high 19 points, tying her career-high, and also pulled down a team-high seven also which was also a season-high. Vick played all 40 minutes for the first time in her career en route to scoring 16 points while also adding five rebounds and four assists.
The Wolfpack (4-3) had three players score in double figures. Da'Ja Hamilton led Nevada with 17 points. Nia Alexander finished with 14 points and Kylie Jimenez added 11 points.
Nevada began the game by getting out to a 9-0 lead in the first 90 seconds. The Mustangs (1-4) answered back with six straight points, with four coming from Vick, to get it back to within three. Cal Poly later found itself trailing 17-8 before finishing the quarter on a 6-2 run.
The Mustangs began the second quarter with a 12-2 run to regain the lead 26-21. Nevada then ended the quarter on a 12-0 run to take a 33-26 lead into halftime.
In the third quarter, the Wolfpack went ahead 36-26 before an 11-0 run spearheaded by Vick and Willett gave Cal Poly a 37-36 lead. However, that proved to be the final time the Mustangs would lead in the game as Nevada ended the third quarter ahead 40-37 and never trailed in the fourth.
Early in the fourth quarter, a three by Willett cut the Nevada lead to 46-43. That is as close as the Mustangs got it for the rest of the game as the Wolfpack went on a 10-2 run from there to pull ahead by 11.
Cal Poly wraps up its five-game homestand Saturday with a 2 p.m. game against Denver.
