Mustangs Fall at Home to Denver Saturday, 63-75

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Three Mustangs finished with double figures in scoring but Cal Poly fell to Denver Saturday at Mott Athletics Center 63-75 in the finale of its five game homestand.
Junior guard Maddie Vick led the Mustangs (1-5) in scoring with 13 points. She also added five assists and three rebounds as she played all 40 minutes for the second game in a row. Junior guard Maddie Willett added 12 points while senior forward Hannah Scanlan chipped in 11 points and seven rebounds. Graduate forward Kirsty Brown nearly recorded a double-double, finishing with eight points and a team-high nine rebounds.
Cal Poly led just once in the game at 4-2 with 7:44 left in the first quarter as the Pioneers (3-5) led the rest of the way.
The Mustangs set a season-high for offensive rebounds with 19, the most in a game by Cal Poly since they had 26 against Holy Names on Jan. 2, 2020.
After the Mustangs took the 4-2 lead, Cal Poly went scoreless for nearly six minutes as Denver went on a 9-0 run. The Mustangs scored three baskets towards the end of the quarter to cut the Pioneers lead to 15-10 at the end of the first.
Denver opened the second quarter with five unanswered points to extend its lead to 10. Cal Poly got it back to within six before Denver went on an 8-0 run to take a 38-21 lead into halftime.
After the Pioneers started the third by getting out to their largest lead of 18, a 15-4 run sparked by threes from Vick and Willett trimmed the Denver lead to seven. However, Cal Poly was unable to get any closer.
The Mustangs will now hit the road for their next two games as they will travel to Flagstaff, Ariz. to play Northern Arizona on Dec. 13 at 6 p.m. and at PAC-12 foe Cal on Dec. 18 at 3 p.m.
