12/13/2021 8:06:00 PM | Women's Basketball
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Junior guard Maddie Willett scored a career-high 20 points and two other Mustangs scored in double figures but Cal Poly fell on the road Monday at Northern Arizona University, 73-88.
Willett hit a season-high four threes, including three in the first quarter, en route to her 20 points. Fellow junior guard Maddie Vick tied a career-high with 19 points playing back in her home state, her fifth game in a row scoring double digits. She also added three steals, three rebounds, and two assists. Graduate forward Kirsty Brown recorded her first double-double of the season with a season-high 12 points and a career-high 14 rebounds.
The Mustangs (1-6), who came into the game shooting about 20 percent from three on the season, shot a season-high 55.6 percent (5-9) from beyond the arc.
However, Cal Poly committed 20 turnovers which the Lumberjacks (5-4) turned into 28 points. NAU also had 22 fast break points to the Mustangs' nine, and 32 points off the bench to Cal Poly's 15.
The Lumberjacks also had three players score in double figures, including a game-high 25 points from guard Lauren Orndoff.
After trailing 6-2 to begin the game, Cal Poly scored seven straight points to take their first lead. The Mustangs led the rest of the quarter and held a 25-20 after the opening quarter.
Cal Poly continued to hold the lead into the second quarter until with 3:43 left in the first half, a jumper by NAU's Miki'ala Maio put the Lumberjacks ahead 34-33 and took a 40-37 lead into halftime.
NAU started the third quarter on a 16-5 run to go up by 14. After falling behind 58-44 with 4:36 left in the quarter, the Mustangs battled back with an 11-0 run to cut the lead to 58-55. The Lumberjacks then finished the quarter on a 7-0 run to go back up by 10.
That run continued into the fourth quarter as NAU scored the first five points to go ahead by 15 and later led by as many as 19.
Cal Poly will play one more road game this week before returning home next week. The Mustangs will travel up to Berkeley Saturday for a 3 p.m. game against Cal looking to snap a four-game losing skid.
