Mustangs Fall at Cal Saturday, 89-73

BERKELEY, Calif. — Three Mustangs scored season-highs but the Cal Poly women's basketball team fell to Cal 89-73 Saturday inside Haas Pavilion.
Senior forward Hannah Scanlan led the Mustangs (1-7) with a season-high 15 points to go along with five rebounds. Junior forward Julia Nielacna and freshman guard Sydney Bourland also had season-highs with 14 points each.
The Mustangs, who shot 42.4 percent from the field, were limited to just three of 12 from three while the Golden Bears shot 10 for 18 from beyond the arc while shooting 47.6 percent from the field.
Cal Poly held Cal scoreless for the first three minutes of the game as they got out to a 6-0 lead. Scanlan scored eight of the Mustangs' first 10 points.
A layup from redshirt freshman guard Sarah Dumitrescu with 1:45 left in the first quarter gave the Mustangs a 14-13 lead. However, it would be their final lead of the game as the Golden Bears finished the quarter on a 9-0 run.
A three pointer by sophomore Junie Dickson followed by a layup from Dumitrescu to open the second quarter cut the Cal lead to 22-19. With the Golden Bears leading 29-25 with 4:44 left in the quarter, Cal finished the half on a 17-4 run to go up 46-29.
Back-to-back baskets by graduate forward Kirsty Brown and freshman guard Jazzy Anousinh trimmed the Cal lead to 13. But that is as close as Cal Poly got as from there the Golden Bears went on a 14-2 run to push their lead back up to 25.
The Mustangs will now return to Mott Athletics Center on Tuesday for a 1 p.m. matchup against Cal Baptist inside Mott Athletics Center.
