Cal Poly Falls to California Baptist in Overtime Thriller, 66-64
12/21/2021 4:21:00 PM | Women's Basketball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Senior forward Hannah Scanlan and graduate forward Kirsty Brown each recorded double-doubles but two made free throws by Cal Baptist's Ane Olaeta with one second remaining in overtime gave the Lancers the 66-64 win over Cal Poly Tuesday.
Scanlan finished with season-highs of 19 points and 12 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Brown recorded her second double-double of the season after finishing with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Junior forward Julia Nielacna also scored double digits adding 11 points and five rebounds.
The Mustangs (1-8) had a season-low 11 turnovers. However, neither team shot the ball well from three with Cal Poly going 1-8 while CBU went 5-32.
The Lancers were led by forward Britney Thomas' game-high 29 points and 13 rebounds. Forward Caitlyn Harper added 16 points and four rebounds.
With 1:55 left in the fourth quarter, the Mustangs trailed 55-53. Cal Poly was held scoreless until, with four seconds remaining, junior guard Maddie Willett was fouled and made both free throws to tie it and send it to overtime.
With Cal Poly playing its first overtime game of the season, the Mustangs scored the first four points via a Willett layup and a jumper from junior guard Maddie Vick. After the Mustangs went ahead 61-57 with 3:23 left, the Lancers scored five straight points to regain the lead 62-61 with 2:22 left.
After Scanlan made one of two free throws to tie it, a basket by Willett with 50 seconds remaining gave Cal Poly a 64-62 advantage. The next possession, CBU's Ane Olaeta tied it with a jumper with 36 seconds left.
Cal Poly's next possession resulted in a turnover in which Olaeta attacked the paint and was fouled by Vick with one second left. After she made both free throws to put CBU ahead 66-64, Cal Poly called timeout to advance the ball to midcourt. However, the Mustangs were unable to get a shot off before the buzzer.
After holding a 33-30 lead at halftime, Cal Poly opened the third quarter with a 10-2 run during which they held CBU scoreless for nearly four minutes to take their largest lead of the game 43-32.
However, the Lancers answered back with a 13-2 run to end the quarter tied 45-45.
