2022 CAL POLY BASEBALL SCHEDULE
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Six games against Pac-12 teams, 32 of 59 games inside Baggett Stadium and a return to three-game Big West Conference series highlight the 2022 Cal Poly baseball schedule announced Tuesday by head coach Larry Lee.
The Mustangs will play seven games against three teams who qualified for the 2021 NCAA regionals, a pair of doubleheaders as part of four-game home series and five non-conference series in addition to 10 Big West series.
"A 59-game 2022 schedule looks to be another challenging one with a mixture of non-conference series within and outside of the West to go along with our 30-game Big West Conference schedule," said Lee as he heads into his 20th season as head coach.
"Twelve midweek games against teams such as Stanford, Cal, Pepperdine and Fresno State add to strengthen the schedule," Lee added.
Cal Poly will open with a three-game set against Washington on Feb. 18-20 and will host Harvard (March 11-13) and Dixie State (April 1-3) for four-game series, including Saturday doubleheaders. The other Pac-12 matchups are a single game against Stanford on April 19 at Baggett Stadium and two single contests at Cal on March 22 and April 5.
The Mustangs' non-conference weekend series on the road will be at Missouri State on Feb. 25-27 and at UNLV on March 4-6.
In the Big West, Cal Poly will host CSUN (March 18-20), Long Beach State (April 8-10), UC Santa Barbara (April 29-May 1), CSU Bakersfield (May 6-8) and UC Davis (May 20-22). The conference series on the road include UC San Diego (March 25-27), defending champion UC Irvine (April 14-16), UC Riverside (April 22-24), Cal State Fullerton (May 13-15) and Hawai'i (May 26-28).
In addition to Stanford, the Mustangs will host midweek games versus Fresno State (Feb. 22), Portland (March 2), San Jose State (March 8), Santa Clara (March 29) and Pepperdine (May 10).
Cal Poly visits San Jose State (April 11), Santa Clara (April 26), Fresno State (May 3) and Pepperdine (May 17) in addition to the two games at Cal.
The Mustangs finished tied for fourth with CSUN and UC San Diego in the Big West, all with 21-19 marks, and 31-25 overall a year ago, winning their final seven games and 11 of 12. The Mustangs finished in the top four in the Big West for the 16th time in the last 18 years (not counting the pandemic-shortened 2020 season).
Cal Poly returns 22 lettermen, including seven players who started 20 or more games in 2021 and 13 of last year's 16 pitchers for the 2022 season. A total of 15 newcomers have been added to the roster as well. Top returnees include four-time All-American and Big West Field Player of the Year Brooks Lee, who with pitcher Drew Thorpe also earned freshman All-American honors. Other returnees include designated hitter Matt Lopez, third baseman Tate Samuelson and pitchers Travis Weston, Kyle Scott, Dylan Villalobos, Chase Walter, Carlo Lopiccolo and Bryce Warrecker.
The Mustangs claimed eight of the 15 weekend series on the 2021 schedule and played all 56 games in the Golden State for the second time in the last five years.
Since and including 2011, Cal Poly is the only Big West team to have a winning or .500 overall record each year (excluding 2020) and, also since 2011, Cal Poly is the only Big West team to finish at least fourth or higher every year, including one first place, five seconds, one third and three fourths.
