Vick Sets Career-High But Mustangs Fall to Montana State, 55-67

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Junior guard Maddie Vick set a new career-high with 19 points and senior forward Kirsty Brown nearly recorded a double-double but the Cal Poly women's basketball team fell to Montana State Saturday 55-67 in its final game of the Holiday Beach Classic at Mott Athletics Center.
Vick finished 9-12 from the field and had 13 of her points in the second half as she was named to the Holiday Beach Classic All-Tournament Team. Brown finished with 13 points and nine rebounds. Junior forward Julia Nielacna added six points and eight rebounds.
The Mustangs (1-3) shot just 1-16 from three and 33-percent from the field as the Mustangs missed their first 13 attempts from the three point line.
After going down 13-8 in the first quarter, seven straight points by Cal Poly gave them a 15-13 lead.
With the Mustangs trailing 17-16 in the second quarter, four points in a row by Vick regained the lead for Cal Poly. The Mustangs then went over three minutes without scoring before rattling off five points to finish the half. The Bobcats' Darian White, who finished with 19 points, hit a jumper to end the half which put Montana State ahead 26-25.
In the third quarter, Cal Poly went scoreless for over three minutes during which time Montana State went on an 8-0 run to take a 35-30 lead. Both teams went back-and-forth from there as the Bobcats led 44-40 at the end of the third.
Montana State took a 52-44 lead with 5:31 left to play in the fourth quarter before Cal Poly cut the lead to four at 53-49. However, that is as close as the Mustangs got as the Bobcats went on a 10-4 run from there to take a 10 point lead to close the door.
Cal Poly will play two more home games next week to wrap up its five-game homestand. The Mustangs will host Nevada on Thursday for an 11 a.m. tip time. They then welcome Denver on Saturday at 2 p.m.
