Cal Poly Takes Over First Place with 3-0 Thursday Win
10/7/2021 9:57:00 PM | Women's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Forward Nikki Trucco (above, center) scored her team leading seventh goal of the season 82 seconds after kickoff and fellow sophomores Olivia Ortiz and Kylie Rojas each added their second goals of the year as the Cal Poly women's soccer program grabbed sole possession of first place atop the Big West Conference standings with a 3-0 victory against CSU Bakersfield Thursday evening.
Freshman goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel chalked up one save in her first collegiate appearance for Cal Poly (8-6-0, 4-1-0), which outshot CSU Bakersfield (1-9-2, 0-2-1), 27-1. Aside from scoring three times, Cal Poly forced CSU Bakersfield goalkeeper Flavia Burrell into nine saves.
Entering Thursday's round of matches in second place in the Big West standings, Cal Poly improved to 12 points and grabbed the top spot after previous leader Long Beach State (6-5-2, 3-1-1) – on 10 points – was unseated with a 1-0 overtime loss to UC Irvine.
Cal Poly found the eventual winning goal with the evening's first shot on target as junior forward Brooke Rubenstein played a pass toward the right side of the CSU Bakersfield penalty area for Trucco, whose seven-goal total ranks second among Big West players.
The Mustangs doubled their lead six minutes before the break as junior midfielder Sidra Bugsch slotted a pass upfield for Ortiz, who fired past Burrell.
Bugsch then earned her second assist of the night in the 54th minute, setting up Rojas who scored with her only shot attempt of the match.
Defensively, Cal Poly kept CSU Bakersfield without a shot attempt for the opening 53 minutes as Samuel turned away Roadrunner Darian Tatum in her only action of the night.
Cal Poly continues its final home stand of the season – a three-game run – when hosting CSUN on Sunday, Oct. 10 at 12 noon.
