DAVIS, Calif. -- William Fallini-Haas' third-place finish guided the Cal Poly men's team to second place while Schuyler Gooley led the Mustang women to third place in the Big West Conference Cross Country Championships on Friday at Wildhorse Golf Course.
Fallini-Haas completed the 8,000-meter course in 23 minutes, 47.2 seconds, about 13 seconds behind individual champion Sam Ayala of Cal State Fullerton. Nick Randazzo of UC Santa Barbara finished second.
UC Santa Barbara snapped Cal Poly's four-year reign as Big West champion, scoring 38 points with runners finishing second, fifth, sixth, 12th and 13th. The Mustangs also produced three top-10 finishers in third, eighth and ninth along with runners in 14th and 16th, scoring 50 points.
Cal State Fullerton was third with 64 points.
Cal Poly's other top-10 finishers were Xian Shively in eighth, timed in 24:13.9, and Anthony Guerra in ninth with a time of 24:14.6.
On the women's side, Gooley was Cal Poly's top finisher with a time of 20:51.6 for ninth place in the 6,000-meter race. Julia Heckey, Sierra Brill and Hailey Golman finished within 2.7 seconds of each other in 14th, 15th and 16th while Claudia Miller was 21st.
The Mustang women, which claimed four of the last six conference titles, scored 78 points. Running on its home course, UC Davis captured top team honors with 26 points, placing runners in second, third, fifth, sixth and 10th. Cal State Fullerton was second with 60 points.
Trinity Ruelas of Cal State Fullerton was crowned Big West women's individual champion with a time of 20:09.0, more than 12 seconds ahead of runner-up Sierra Atkins of UC Davis. Brianna Weidler of UC Davis was third.
Cal Poly will compete in the NCAA West Regional on Nov. 12 at the Haggin Oaks Golf Complex in Sacramento.
