Cornejo Leads Mustangs at Arturo Barrios Invitational

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Fifth-year Tatiana Cornejo had another standout performance and senior Rory Catsimanes paced the men as the Cal Poly cross country program competed in the Arturo Barrios Invitational hosted by Texas A&M on Friday.
The Mustangs’ top runners on the men’s and women’s side descended upon Watts Cross Country Course in College Station, Texas, to battle some stiff competition in one of their final tuneups before the Big West Championships.
Cornejo continued her impressive season, capturing fourth in the women’s 6K race with a time of 19:17.0, just .02 seconds off her lifetime best that she ran three weeks ago to place third at the Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational (19:16.8). The two-time USTFCCCA All-West Region honoree has finished fourth or better in all three meets she’s competed in this season.
True freshman Sydney Middleton was the next Mustang to cross the finish line on the women’s side, running a 6K personal best (20:55.3) en route to placing 81st in a field of over 385 runners. Senior Lianna Guerra also posted a 6K lifetime best (21:01.0) to take 91st and junior Melisse Djomby Enyawe secured 93rd (21:01.6). Senior Sydney Sundgren finished 115th (21:12.5) and junior Renae Searls placed 158th (21:31.2) to round out the six runners that participated in the meet for the Cal Poly women.
The women placed 10th (369 points) out of the 46 teams that scored at the meet.
Catsimanes led the way for the Cal Poly men, who took seventh (238 points) out of 38 teams. While posting an 8K lifetime best, Catsimanes secured 27th (23:41.8) in his second meet of the season. Sophomore J.R. Lesher crossed the finish line in 45th with an impressive 8K personal best of 23:55.6 while senior Dheeraj Gurusamy earned 53rd (23:58.9).
True freshman Kyle Jakary ran an 8K lifetime best en route to taking 56th (24:01.0). Sophomore Miles Cook finished 74th (24:11.8), senior Ethan Miller 103rd (24:11.8) and junior Devin Ibarra 124th (24:39.1).
A handful of Mustangs will compete in the Bronco Invitational hosted by Santa Clara on Saturday morning to wrap up regular season action. You can follow the live results HERE.
