Cornejo Impresses to Highlight Cal Poly's Showing at Lakefront Invitational

CHICAGO, Ill. — An impressive performance by fifth year Tatiana Cornejo highlighted Cal Poly cross country’s showing at the Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational hosted by Loyola Chicago on Friday.
A total of 17 Mustangs competed in the meet held at Sydney R. Marovitz Golf Course — 10 women and seven men.
It marked the third straight year Cal Poly made the trip to the Windy City to take part in the race on the shore of Lake Michigan, and Cornejo put on a show amongst a loaded field in the women’s 6K race.
The Elk Grove, Calif. laid down an over 40-second 6K lifetime best, crossing the finish line in third with a blistering time of 19:16.8. It was a sensational showing by the two-time USTFCCCA All-West Region honoree and the 2026 Second Team All-American in the women’s indoor mile. Cornejo improved upon her previous 6K personal best on the course (20:23.5) by over a minute.
Juniors Melisse Djomby Enyawe (20:34.73) and Nikki Bridges (20:38.09) were next to cross the finish line for the Cal Poly women, placing 73rd and 78th respectively. Djomby Enyawe’s 6K time was a lifetime best.
Senior Lianna Guerra placed 105th (21:01.82) and then freshmen Brenna Mannion (21:02.03), Sydney Middleton (21:08.02) and Isabella Ramirez (21:13.80) earned 106th, 110th and 114th respectively. Senior Sydney Sundgren (115th, 21:14.44), junior Ella Echsner (128th, 21:34.61) and junior Renae Searls (136th, 21:56.61) rounded out the runners that competed for the Mustang women, who finished 14th as a team with 343 points.
On the men’s side, senior Dheeraj Gurusamy was the Mustangs’ top finisher for the second straight meet, capturing 57th with a personal best 8K time of 23:39.2. Sophomore Miles Cook was right behind him with a 8K PR of his own, taking 60th (23:40.71).
Freshman Kyle Jakary secured 113th (24:21.33), sophomore J.R. Lesher 118th (24:28.62), junior Devin Ibarra 119th (24:30.21), freshman Oliver Hunter 121st (24:34.97) and junior Taj Clark 138th (24:57.97).
The Cal Poly men earned 15th as a team (418 points).
The Mustangs return to competition in three weeks for their final action of the regular season. Cal Poly will split the squad between the Arturo Barrios Invitational hosted by Texas A&M on Friday, Oct. 16, and the Bronco Invitational hosted by Santa Clara on Saturday, Oct. 17.
