Mustangs Win Fourth Straight With Sweep of CSU Bakersfield

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Redshirt senior outside hitter Jamie Stivers collected her seventh double-double of the season to lead the Cal Poly volleyball team to its fourth consecutive victory Tuesday, sweeping CSU Bakersfield 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-9) at Mott Athletics Center.
Stivers recorded a team-high 13 kills on an efficient .429 attack percentage while also adding a team-high 12 digs. Redshirt freshman outside hitter Tommi Stockham added 12 kills hitting .320, the third time in the last four matches she has had double-digit kills. Junior middle blocker Meredith Phillips had seven kills while hitting .333. Junior setter Avalon DeNecochea tallied 35 assists, seven digs, and three kills.
Defensively, redshirt freshmen Amy Hiatt and Kate Slack shared the team lead in blocks with four each on the night. In the back row, junior defensive specialist Lea Ungar had eight digs while freshman libero Peyton Dueck added seven.
As a team, the Mustangs (8-10, 6-1 BWC) hit .327 while holding the Roadrunners (10-5, 3-4 BWC) to a .080 attack percentage. Cal Poly also had a sideout percentage of 66 for the match, including 100-percent in the third set and only trailed twice during the entire match.
During this win streak, all four of them have come via sweeps. The last time they dropped a set was in the Oct. 1 loss to UCSB.
In the first set, the Mustangs got out to a 4-1 lead and never relinquished it from there. Tied at 6, Cal Poly scored four straight points before the Roadrunners answered with three consecutive points to cut it to one. Up 11-10, the Mustangs again went on a 4-1 run to push their lead to 15-11. CSU Bakersfield got it to as close as 18-16 before Cal Poly ran away with it, closing the set on a 7-2 run to win it 25-18.
The Mustangs began the second set taking a 6-2 advantage. After the Roadrunners cut it to 7-5, Cal Poly pushed its lead to 12-7 with a 5-2 run. CSU Bakersfield then scored four straight points to cut it to 12-11 before the Mustangs responded with four consecutive points of their own to make it 16-11. Once again, the Roadrunners answered back with five points in a row to tie it at 16. Tied at 19, Cal Poly put the final nail in the coffin with a 6-1 run to win the set 25-20.
The Mustangs saved one of their most dominant sets of the season for the third, hitting .538 and a perfect sideout rate. It was tight early until with Cal Poly ahead 7-5, the Mustangs went on a 14-2 run to pull away 21-7. In that run included Cal Poly scoring nine straight points. They went on to win the set 25-9, marking the second time this season that they have held an opponent to single digit points for a set. The first was during the Mustangs' 3-0 win against Texas A&M Corpus Christi on August 28.
The Mustangs now sit alone in third place in the Big West standings at 6-1. They will now head to Honolulu to face Hawai'i who sits tied for first in the standings with UCSB at 6-0. Cal Poly and the Rainbow Wahine will square off on Friday at 10 p.m. PT inside the Stan Sheriff Center.
