UC Irvine Edges Cal Poly in Overtime, 79-70
1/23/2021 6:35:00 PM | Women's Basketball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly battled back from a 14-point third-quarter deficit on Saturday to move into the lead in the fourth at Mott Athletics Center, but UC Irvine tied the Big West clash late to force overtime, and ultimately prevailed for a 79-70 conference win.
Mustang true freshman Natalia Ackerman netted a season-high 15 points on flawless 7-for-7 overall shooting, and gathered 10 rebounds for her first collegiate double-double. The 6-foot-1 forward out of Aptos High was the Central Coast Section Player of the Year a season ago.
The Anteaters (improving to 7-5 overall; 4-0 BWC) established a 21-14 lead through the first quarter before heading to intermission still up by seven, 35-28.
UCI took the largest lead of the game, 53-39, upon a pair of free throws by Alexus Seaton with 2:43 remaining in the third.
Midway through the fourth, however, the Mustangs (5-5; 1-3) went on a 13-0 run to move in front. Senior forward Kirsty Brown tied the game at 60-all with a jumper with 2:52 left in regulation, before converting her fourth straight basket, sinking a layup at the 1:31 mark to put Cal Poly ahead, 62-60.
Kayla Williams answered with a huge 3 on the next possession for Irvine, before sophomore guard Maddie Willett switched the lead back once more, scoring in the key with 34 seconds to play. Then with seven seconds to go, Chloe Webb made one of two free-throw attempts to tie it back up again, 64-all.
The Mustangs missed two last potentially game-winning looks on the final possession of the fourth quarter, sending matters to OT.
After winning possession to start overtime, Haleigh Talbert drove for a layup, and then Williams drilled another 3 off an offensive rebound, pushing the Anteater lead to 69-64.
Cal Poly pulled within 71-70 on back-to-back free throws by Willett with 58 seconds to play, but Williams sank yet another 3 — her seventh of the evening — to push the margin back to 74-70. The Mustangs missed their next shot, and the Anteaters added the final points of the day on a pair of free throws down the stretch.
Williams finished with 32 points for UCI.
Brown added 14 points for the Mustangs, and fellow senior forward Sierra Campisano added 13 points and 11 boards to earn her fifth double-double this season. Sophomore guard Maddie Vick dished out a game-high seven assists for Cal Poly.
Up next, the Mustangs visit UC Riverside (5-5; 2-2) on Jan. 29-30. Both games at SRC Arena tip off at 3 p.m. on BigWest.TV.
