Mustangs Fall in Saturday Decision to UC Riverside, 70-53

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Sophomore forward Alimamy Koroma produced his team leading fifth double-digit scoring game of the season Saturday with 13 points, but the Cal Poly men's basketball program sustained its second home deficit against UC Riverside in as many afternoons, falling to the Highlanders inside Mott Athletics Center, 70-53.
Senior guard Mark Crowe (above) added nine points and junior forward Tuukka Jaakkola finished with eight for Cal Poly (2-8, 0-4), which trailed UC Riverside (6-3, 3-1) by four points at halftime and by six with nine-and-a-half minutes remaining. The Highlanders, however, kept Cal Poly scoreless for the next seven minutes to pull away.
Senior guard Keith Smith matched a career high with eight rebounds for Cal Poly, which resumes action with a two-game, Jan. 22-23 series at UC Irvine. Tip time from the Bren Events Center is 5 p.m. both afternoons.
With Koroma scoring all of Cal Poly's early points for the second successive day, the Mustangs trailed UC Riverside after six minutes, 12-7. Sophomore forward Tuukka Jaakkola flushed a dunk for Cal Poly's next basket, but UC Riverside responded with a 7-0 run to go up 19-9 with 11 minutes remaining in the opening half.
Cal Poly though kept UC Riverside without a field goal for the ensuing six-and-a-half minutes, utilizing 13 points from four different Mustangs to take a 22-20 lead. Cal Poly trailed UC Riverside just once more the remainder of the half, taking a 30-26 deficit into the break.
UC Riverside, however, limited Cal Poly to just two Koroma field goals and a Jaakkola layup to begin the second half as the Highlanders carved out a 40-30 advantage with 16 minutes to go.
Thrice Cal Poly dropped its deficit to six points and once to five with a three-pointer from freshman guard Kobe Sanders bringing the Mustangs to a 42-37 disadvantage with 14 minutes remaining. Still trailing, 53-39, Cal Poly compiled an 8-0 run to cut the UC Riverside lead to six once more. The 53-47 gap was as close as Cal Poly bridged down the stretch, however, as UC Riverside received two three-pointers from guard George Wilborn III to place the scoreline back in double-digit territory.
