IRVINE – Sophomore forward Alimamy Koroma led the Cal Poly men's basketball program in scoring for the third successive matchup with nine points Friday evening, but the Mustangs opened a two-game series against UC Irvine with a 68-49 loss inside the Bren Events Center.
Guard Keith Smith (above) added eight points and fellow senior Mark Crowe finished with seven for Cal Poly (2-9, 0-5), which shot a season high 41.2 (7-for-17) from three-point range. The Mustangs, however, fell into a double-digit deficit late in the first half as Big West Conference leader UC Irvine (7-4, 3-0) – which outrebounded Cal Poly, 41-27 – led for the final 35 minutes.
Freshman forward Dyson Koehler led Cal Poly with six rebounds. Cal Poly's leading rebounder with 5.9 boards per game, Koehler has grabbed six-plus rebounds in a game seven times this season.

Capped with Crowe completing a four-point play, Cal Poly ran out to a 11-7 lead after three-and-a-half minutes. The Mustangs, however, were kept scoreless for the ensuing six minutes as UC Irvine assumed a 17-11 advantage with 10 minutes remaining in the half.

UC Irvine took a 36-20 lead into the break before Cal Poly closed its deficit to 46-36 with 14 minutes to go. The Mustangs were kept to just field goals from freshman Aidan Prukop and fellow forward Tuukka Jaakkola during the next six minutes, however, and slipped to a 59-40 disadvantage.
