Golden Moments in Mustang History: Krieghoff Scores 5 Goals
9/23/2020 11:11:00 AM | Women's Soccer
Each Wednesday from September to December, Cal Poly will look back at notable performances from past fall-season teams through the Golden 1 Credit Union Golden Moments in Mustang History series.
6 Years Ago Today:
Sept. 23, 2014 — Cal Poly forward Elise Krieghoff was announced as co-Disney Soccer/NSCAA National Player of the Week, sharing the award with Illinois' Jannelle Flaws.
Krieghoff scored five goals during a 6-1 win over Fresno State the previous Friday evening, Sept. 19, at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
The third hat trick of Krieghoff's career tied the all-time single-game Mustang record, as Wendy Jones also had five vs. Vanguard in 1993.
Also in the week ensuing from the game, ESPNW selected Krieghoff's performance as "One of 5 Things to Know About the Week in College Soccer" across the country. "Putting five in the back of the net in one game is a first for Krieghoff, but she was as good a bet as any player in the country to do it," wrote ESPN.com's Graham Hays.
Elise had previously tallied four goals in a win at CSU Bakersfield in 2013, before netting three more in a home victory over San Jose State later as a sophomore.
Her five-strike effort also equaled the all-time Big West Conference record shared by three others (most recently Krystal Sandza of UC Santa Barbara vs. Air Force in 2002).
"She's a special player, and she's getting better and better by the week," Mustang head coach Alex Crozier told reporters afterward.
After finishing with a school-record 52 goals for her career, Krieghoff went on to play professionally for both the Boston Breakers of the NWSL and Vålerenga Damer in the Toppserien League.
She scored in the 11th, 17th and 38th minutes to give the Mustangs a 3-0 halftime advantage, and added two more goals upon 54' and 57'. Megan Abutin recorded a pair of assists, while Sara Lancaster and Lydia Anderson each had one.
Mustang goalkeeper Alyssa Giannetti recorded four saves in 64 minutes of duty before Megan Heddinger tallied one save in the victory over the Bulldogs.
