SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly's Big Sky Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year is senior offensive lineman David Chellsen.
The conference, of which Cal Poly is a member for football only, announced its scholar-athletes for all sports Tuesday. The award honors seniors who have excelled in the classroom and on the field.
Named a member of the Hampshire Honor Society by the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame last month, Chellsen made the Big Sky Conference's All-Academic Football Team four times in his Mustang career and twice landed on the College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-District 8 team.
The San Luis Obispo High School graduate missed the final five games of the 2019 season due to injury. The industrial engineering major was part of an offensive line that finished No. 9 in the Football Championship Subdivision in rushing offense, No. 5 in fourth-down conversions, No. 7 in time of possession and No. 25 in third-down conversions.
Chellsen, who played on the right side of the offensive line and also was a tight end on certain downs, compiled a 3.86 cumulative grade-point average. He made Cal Poly's Dean's List all 14 quarters in which he was enrolled at Cal Poly (Fall 2015 through Winter 2020). In three of those terms, he compiled a 4.00 GPA.
