SAN LUIS OBISPO – Head coach John Smith announced the seventh member of the Cal Poly men's basketball team's incoming class for the 2020-21 season on Wednesday with 6-3 combo guard Ryan Evans (Mater Dei HS / Coto de Caza, Calif.) joining the program as a walk-on student-athlete.
As a senior last season, Evans averaged 8.4 points per game as Mater Del HS finished 25-8 overall and captured the Trinity League title behind a 9-1 record.
A two-year letterwinner for the Monarchs, Evans intends to major in business administration. Evans was a high school teammate of fellow incoming Mustang and 6-4 guard Aidan Prukop.
"We're very fortunate to have Ryan join our team as a preferred walk-on," said Smith, who completed his first year as Cal Poly head coach this past season. "Ryan is a versatile guard with size and has the ability to stretch the floor from deep. Coming from Mater Dei HS – one of the winningest programs in the country – he understands what it takes to be a part of something bigger than himself."
Evans joins five other high school standouts and Iowa graduate transfer Riley Till in comprising Cal Poly's seven-player incoming class. Alongside Evans, Till and Prukop, Cal Poly has added 5-10 point guard Camren Pierce (Etiwanda HS / Ranch Cucamonga, Calif.), 6-4 shooting guard Brantly Stevenson (Etiwanda HS / Ranch Cucamonga, Calif.), 6-7 combo guard Kobe Sanders (Christian HS / San Diego, Calif.) and 6-7 small forward Dyson Koehler (Jordan HS / Salt Lake City, Utah) for the 2020-21 season.
