FULLERTON – Senior designated player Shelby Jeffries homered twice and sophomore right fielder Lily Amos's sixth-inning, solo home run provided the Cal Poly softball program a late lead, but Grand Canyon scored three times in the seventh to edge the Mustangs late Friday evening at the Cal State Fullerton-hosted Judi Garman Classic, 6-4.

Cal Poly starting sophomore lefthander Krystyna Allman limited Grand Canyon to just one hit through the opening two innings before the Antelopes scratched out the game's opening run in the top half of the third through a two-out, run-scoring single from first baseman Lilly Bishop.

Cal Poly (10-7), however, responded at the first opportunity. With one down in the bottom of the third, freshman left fielder Sydney Frankenberger reached base through a Grand Canyon error. Two batters later, Jeffries homered to right field to hand Cal Poly the 2-1 advantage.

With senior righthander Steffi Best (3-4) taking over for Allman in the circle to open the fourth, Grand Canyon grabbed a run back at its first chance with left fielder Gianna Nicoletti scoring on a Mustang fielding error after second baseman Araceli Pesqueira deposited a single up the middle of the infield.

The Antelopes then notched the go-ahead run in the top of the fifth as Nicoletti scored for the second time after catcher Kaileigh Holland singled into the outfield with two down.

With the Mustangs held hitless to close the fifth, Jeffries swatted the first pitch of the bottom half of the sixth over the center field fence. Two pitches later, Amos homered to left center to hand Cal Poly the 4-3 lead.

Grand Canyon, however, found three runs in the top of the seventh, highlighted by a two-out, two-run Holland double.

Cal Poly concludes Judi Garman Classic action on Saturday, Feb. 29 against Loyola Marymount at 12 noon.
