SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Senior Molly Reed won both her singles and doubles match but the Cal Poly women's tennis team fell at home to Long Beach State Friday 6-1.
The final score was not indicative of how close the match was. In doubles, two of the matches came down to tiebreakers. The No. 3 doubles team of Reed and sophomore Susanne Boyden won their match 7-5. Reed and Boyden are now 2-0 as a team this season.
The No. 2 duo of senior Abby Bacharach and freshman MacKenzie Worsnop played tough but lost 7-6 (3). The doubles point came down to court two and in another closely contested match, freshman Grace Olyphant and junior Caroline Williams forced a tiebreaker but fell 7-6 (3) to have 49ers (8-6, 3-1) take the doubles point.
In singles, Reed got the win at the No. 3 spot after she defeated Maren Helgo in a back-and-forth contest 7-5, 5-7, 10-7. Reed is now 6-3 in singles competition this year, the best record on the team.
Worsnop put up a tough fight at the No. 1 spot, losing in two close sets 7-6 (8), 6-4 to Lena Pacholski. Also losing in three close sets was sophomore Claire Bouquet, who fell to Carlota Casasampere 2-6, 6-4, 11-9.
The Mustangs are now 4-11 overall for the season. They return to action Sunday, April 8 when they host UC Riverside in another Big West Conference dual match at 1:30 p.m. from Mustang Tennis Courts.
