GREELEY, Colo. — Cal Poly and Northern Colorado each won five bouts, but the Bears compiled a slim 6-5 advantage in bonus points for a 21-20 dual meet victory over the Mustangs on Friday night inside Bank of Colorado Arena.
Northern Colorado (2-4) earned one pin and three major decisions for six extra points while Cal Poly (0-4) notched one fall and a technical fall for five points.
Cal Poly's fall was recorded by 141-pounder Colton Schilling as the 31st-ranked wrestler in the nation overcame an early 6-0 deficit for a pin in 2 minutes, 24 seconds against Benjamin Polkowski. It was Schilling's team-leading seventh fall of the year and he lifted his record for the season to 9-5.
At 197, Mustang Tom Lane compiled a 15-0 technical fall over Tanner Davis, scoring a takedown late in the third period plus riding time for the 15-point advantage. Lane, ranked No. 23 at 197 pounds, improved to 12-5 with his third technical fall of the year.
With the dual meet starting at 184 pounds, the Mustangs built a 17-11 lead by winning four of the first seven bouts.
Yoshito Funakoshi and Joshy Cortez both won by decision at 125 and 149 pounds, respectively, to give Cal Poly its six-point advantage, but Northern Colorado scored a major decision and a fall in the next two bouts for a 21-17 lead.
Cal Poly 174-pounder Matt Wilhelm won his match 5-2 in the final bout of the night, closing the gap to a single point. Wilhelm, now 11-6 on the year, scored a takedown in the first period, an escape in the second period and another takedown in the final period for the win.
"We still have some work to do, however, and have to continue to make improvements as we prepare for March," Sioredas added.
Schilling surrendered an early takedown and four-point near fall before turning things around with 12 unanswered points — a takedown, a two-point near fall and a pair of four-point near falls — for a 12-6 lead before pinning Polkowski.
Funakoshi tallied takedowns in both the first and second periods, then snapped a 4-4 tie with an escape with 35 seconds left in the final period for his 5-4 decision.
Cortez (pictured above) notched two takedowns in the first period for a 4-1 lead, then added an escape in the second period and riding time in the last period for his 6-2 decision, earning his first win in a dual meet this season.
The 285-pound bout proved to be pivotal for Northern Colorado as Robert Winters earned a 3-1 sudden-death victory over Spencer Empey, notching a takedown with 25 seconds left in the first extra period. Empey and Winters notched early escapes in the second and third periods of regulation, respectively, to force overtime.
Cal Poly concludes its two-match road trip to the Centennial State on Sunday with an 11 a.m. PST dual meet at Air Force.
