SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly wrestling team travels to the Centennial State this weekend for dual meets against Northern Colorado and Air Force.
The Mustangs visit Northern Colorado in Greeley on Friday night at 6 p.m. PST and will head south to Colorado Springs to take on Air Force on Sunday at 11 a.m.
While the Mustangs (0-3) are still seeking their first dual meet victory of the season, Northern Colorado sports a 1-4 mark and Air Force is 6-2.
Cal Poly has dropped duals to Northwestern, Fresno State and Penn. Senior Colton Schilling is 2-0 at 141 pounds in duals while Matt Wilhelm sports a 2-1 mark at 174 pounds. Tom Lane won his lone dual match against Northwestern.
Northern Colorado defeated Iowa State 22-20 but has lost to Duke, CSU Bakersfield, Northwestern and Oklahoma State.
The Bears have a pair of nationally ranked wrestlers. Keilen Torres is ranked No. 19 at 165 with a 12-6 record. The transfer from Oklahoma State finished third in the Big 12 Championships a year ago. Dylan Gabel is ranked No. 15 at 184 with a 14-6 record and was second in the Big 12 finals a year ago. Both were NCAA qualifiers in 2017.
Air Force has beaten Western State (Colo.), New Mexico Highlands, Colorado Mesa, Long Island Post and Hofstra along with a 24-12 victory over Fresno State on the USS Midway back on Nov. 21 in San Diego. Only losses for the Falcons so far were against South Dakota State and Minnesota.
A year ago, Cal Poly rallied from an early 14-0 deficit and edged Northern Colorado 21-18. Sohrab Movahedi sparked the comeback with a takedown with seven seconds left for a 4-3 decision over Gabel. Lane and Spencer Empey completed the rally with wins in the final two bouts.
Northern Colorado still leads the series, 3-2.
Air Force earned a 21-10 dual win a year ago and is 5-0 all-time against Cal Poly.
Schilling is 8-5 for the season with a team-leading six falls while Wilhelm has compiled a 10-6 mark with a pair of falls. Lane is 11-5 with one pin and Movahedi (pictured above) is 5-5 with five decisions.
The NCAA released the first of four coaches' panel rankings for the 2017-18 wrestling season Thursday. Schilling is ranked No. 31 at 141 pounds while Lane drew a No. 23 ranking at 197 pounds.
The final rankings will be one of the tools used as part of the selection process to determine the qualifiers for the 2018 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in Cleveland on March 15-17.
Next week, Cal Poly will host Stanford for the second of the Mustangs' three home duals this season. The Pac-12 match on Friday, Jan. 26, begins at 7 p.m.
The match will be part of the Mustangs' Alumni and Booster Weekend, featuring a pre-match social at 5:30 p.m. in the tailgate tent behind Mott Athletics Center and a crab feed benefit in the Multi-Activity Center (behind the Recreation Center on campus) on Saturday, Jan. 27.
