GREEN BAY, Wis. — The Cal Poly volleyball team swept both of its matches Friday to start the Green Bay Country Inn & Suites Classic, defeating North Dakota (25-22, 25-17, 25-10) and IUPUI (25-20, 25-16, 25-18) at the Kress Center on the Green Bay campus.
In their opening match against the Fighting Hawks (13-2), sophomore outside hitter Torrey Van Winden led the way for the Mustangs (9-2) with 18 kills. Senior setter Taylor Nelson had a match-high 40 assists; junior outside hitter Adlee Van Winden had a team-high 11 digs and senior outside hitter Raeann Greisen was apart of five of the Mustangs five-and-a-half kills.
As a team, Cal Poly hit .458 for the match, including .600 in the final set.
"I thought we did a very nice job progressing with our execution as the match went on," head coach Sam Crosson said. "Offensively and defensively we got better as the match went on."
Their second match of the day against IUPUI began with both teams trading points in the first set. Tied at 20, the Mustangs scored five straight points from three Jaguars (4-8) errors, an Adlee Van Winden kill and a Nikki Jackson kill to win the set.
The Mustangs came out red-hot to start the second set. Cal Poly got out to a 10-2 lead and never looked back, winning the set 25-16.
The third set began to look much like the first, with both teams going back-and-forth. Down 10-9, the Mustangs would score three straight points and never relinquish the lead from there. An Adlee Van Winden block would seal the set and the match for Cal Poly.
The Mustangs hit .654 in the third set, the highest single-set team hitting percentage they've had all season.
Torrey Van Winden once again led the way for Cal Poly with a match-high 17 kills to go along with 10 digs, hitting .552. She has recorded double figure kills in all 11 matches this season.
Adlee Van Winden chipped in with 11 kills and two blocks. Taylor Nelson had match-high 33 assists to go along with two blocks. Raeann Greisen added 10 kills, hitting .444.
"Raeann took a lot of good, really hard swings," Crosson said. "It was good to get her back in a rhythm heading into conference play next week."
The Mustangs wrap-up tournament play Saturday against host school Green Bay. First serve is set for 2 p.m. PDT.
