GREEN BAY, Wis. — The Cal Poly volleyball team swept its final match of the Green Bay Country Inn & Suites Classic, defeating host school Green Bay (25-15, 25-17, 25-19) to win the tournament.
Adlee Van Winden, who led the Mustangs (10-2) in kills with 13 (seven in the first set), set the tone of the match right from the start. She scored the first three points of the match, all from kills.
Up 5-4, Cal Poly would go on a 9-1 run and never look back from there. The Mustangs took advantage of eight Phoenix (4-7) attack errors to win the set 25-15.
The second set started with the teams trading points until, Cal Poly, up 10-8, went on a 10-2 run to go up 20-10. They would go on to win the set 25-17.
In the second set alone, the Mustangs hit .536 and only committed one error.
The third set went much like the first two. With Cal Poly up 7-5, the Mustangs would go on a 5-1 run and that would be as close as it would get. A Torrey Van Winden kill finished off the match, 25-19.
"I thought it was our most complete match of the year," head coach Sam Crosson said. "Serving, setting, decision-making, and tempo was all really good."
Senior outside hitter Raeann Greisen finished with 10 kills while fellow senior middle blocker Savannah Niemen chipped in with nine kills, three blocks and a service ace. Senior setter Taylor Nelson finished with 34 assists, three blocks, nine digs and a service ace.
Sophomore outside hitter Torrey Van Winden ended with nine kills, three blocks and a service ace. Junior libero Katherine Brouker led the Mustangs in digs with 10.
"The mindset of our team was very good, very business-like," Crosson said. "Good intensity, good vibe on the court."
Torrey Van Winden was named tournament MVP while teammates Taylor Nelson and Adlee Van Winden were named to the all-tournament team.
At 10-2, the Mustangs are off to their best 12-match start since the 1998-1999 team that started 12-0.
Cal Poly now heads to UC Davis to take on the Aggies to begin Big West Conference play. That match is scheduled for Tuesday at 5 p.m. Coach Crosson said he thinks the team is feeling good heading into conference play.
"I think our team has some confidence going. They know they are hard to beat when they are playing well."
The Mustangs will then return home for two matches next weekend against Cal State Fullerton in the home opener on Friday and UC Riverside on Saturday.
