SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Goals from Stephanie Magellan, McKenzie Flood and Megan Abutin lifted the Cal Poly women's soccer team to a 3-1 exhibition win over Fresno State on Sunday evening, as the Mustangs concluded the preseason at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
Sophomore goalkeeper Sophia Brown made three saves while playing the entire first half for Cal Poly, before seniors Brittney Viboch (four saves between the 46th-77th minutes) and Domenique Banta (no shots on frame over the final 13 minutes) saw time between the posts during the second half.
The Mustangs played 10 subs, while the Bulldogs utilized nine backups in the exhibition, combining for 31 substitutions or re-entries altogether.
Magellan was responsible for the go-ahead goal in the 37th minute, as the junior crossed in from the left side of the 18-yard box, ricocheting off a Mustang and into the net. Fresno State equalized in the 51st, when Peyton Cline scored with a right-footed shot into the top-left corner from 9 yards.
Cal Poly regained the lead in the 55th minute, when Flood slotted a ball from freshman Sidra Bugsch home from the middle of the box, before Abutin added a late insurance goal (86') stemming from a corner kick by junior Kelly Kessloff.
Flood, a senior set to appear in her 50th career match on Friday, also scored a goal in the Mustangs' Green vs. Gold intrasquad scrimmage on Aug. 5.
The Mustangs will open the season at the Hoosier Challenge Cup on Friday vs. hosting Indiana (at 4:30 p.m. PDT), before facing Southern Illinois Edwardsville at the tournament on Sunday (8 a.m. PDT).
Cal Poly will return to Spanos Stadium for the regular-season home opener against Sacramento State on Sept. 15.
