BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Mustang senior Megan Abutin scored her 15th career goal on Friday night, but the Cal Poly women's soccer team fell in its 2017 season opener at Indiana, 3-1 on the first day of the Hoosier Challenge Cup.
Abutin scored on a late penalty kick, converting 42 seconds from full time in Armstrong Stadium.
In the NCAA's points statistic (2 per goal; 1 per assist), Abutin (No. 2 in school history with 20 career assists) brought her combined total to 50 — moving from No. 11 to 8 all-time at Cal Poly in the category.
Cal Poly sophomore Jessica Johnson placed a shot on goal just 20 seconds into the match, and again forced a save by IU keeper Bethany Kopel in the 19th minute.
Johnson, an All-Big West Freshman Team selection in 2016, also shot on frame in the 83rd minute, before an additional shot on goal from junior defender Chelsea Barry (87').
The Hoosiers took the lead four minutes from halftime, when Maya Piper headed in a cross from Meghan Scott. Indiana added to the lead in the 60th, as Scott scored on a free kick from 25 yards.
Annelie Leitner cashed in a penalty kick in the 81st minute for the final goal.
Sophomore Sophia Brown made saves for the Mustangs in the 25th, 27th, 45th, 73rd, 75th and 77th minutes.
Friday evening's result evened the all-time series between the two programs, as Cal Poly had won the only other meeting, 3-1 in 2008 at the same tournament.
The Mustangs will return to face defending Ohio Valley Conference champion Southern Illinois Edwardsville on Sunday morning, kicking off at 8 a.m. PDT.
