BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Cal Poly's Georgina Stiegeler and Emma Hotaling scored goals only six minutes apart midway through the second half on Sunday morning, bringing the Mustang women's soccer team level with Southern Illinois Edwardsville, but the Cougars tallied the go-ahead score three minutes later and held on for a 3-2 win at the Hoosier Challenge Cup.
SIUE — defending Ohio Valley Conference champions looking to build upon a trip to the second round of last year's NCAA Tournament — got on the board first at Indiana's Armstrong Stadium when Caroline Hoefert capitalized far-post off a deflection in the 27th minute.
Cal Poly sophomore goalkeeper Sophia Brown made a save in the 32nd minute, but Hoefert, MVP of the 2016 OVC Tournament, notched a brace in the 54th by heading a cross from Andrea Frerker into the right corner.
Stiegeler, a redshirt freshman, netted her first career goal in the 66th minute, with a shot into the top-right corner. Cal Poly freshman Grace Park picked up the assist.
Hotaling, a true freshman, then scored for the Mustangs in the 72nd minute, taking a pass from senior Emily Hansen to bury the equalizer from the perimeter of the penalty area.
SIUE (1-1) broke the deadlock in the 75th minute when MacKenzie Litzsinger shot to the bottom-right following a 1-v-1 opportunity.
Hotaling also forced a save by Juli Rossi with a header in the 49th minute, and sophomore Megan Demijohn also shot on goal in the 34th. The Mustangs' final chance came five minutes from full time, as Ashley Kirchick shot on goal, but Rossi was there for the save.
Cal Poly had a 15-11 edge in overall shots, plus a 4-1 advantage in corners. The all-tournament team will be announced by Indiana later Sunday.
The Mustangs (0-2) will continue their season-opening seven-game road swing next week, visiting CSU Bakersfield at 7 p.m. Wednesday and then San Francisco at 1 p.m. Sunday.
