BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — A 25th-minute goal by Chelsea Barry lifted the Cal Poly women's soccer team to a 1-0 road win over CSU Bakersfield on Wednesday night, as Sophia Brown made four saves in her fifth career shutout.
Megan Abutin placed a shot on goal in the eighth minute, before Senna Brennan also forced a save by Jordan Bertram in the 20th.
The Mustangs broke through with a little more than 20 minutes remaining to halftime, following a corner kick, when Abutin found Barry for a shot from the top of the box that hit the left post and caromed in.
Going back to last season, it was the second goal in seven games for the junior defender (with the previous strike being voted as the NCAA Goal of the Week on TopDrawerSoccer). Barry was an All-Big West Conference Second Team selection a year ago.
The assist was Abutin's 21st for her career, as the senior now is only three back from tying the school record.
In the second half, Bertram stepped in front of shots by sophomores Jordan Patane (51') and Jessica Johnson (56'), and Patane hit the post in the 57th minute. Freshman Heather Huene separated for one last shot on goal in the 87th before Bertram kept the Roadrunners alive.
Brown made her stops in the 16th, 26th, 59th and 66th minutes, while senior Emily Hansen joined Barry in playing the entire match to earn the clean sheet.
The Mustangs had a 6-4 edge in corner kicks for the game.
Cal Poly (1-2), on its longest season-opening road trip in 20 years, will continue early non-conference play at San Francisco on Sunday, kicking off at 1 p.m. in Negoesco Stadium.
