Cal Poly Men's Tennis Takes Second at Big West Conference Tournament

INDIAN WELLS – The third seeded Cal Poly men's tennis team finished second at the Big West Conference Tournament, as it fell to UC Santa Barbara 4-1 on Sunday morning in Indian Wells, Calif.
After beating the second seeded UC Davis 4-2 in the semifinals on Friday, the Mustangs advanced to the championship final, where they took on No. 1 UC Santa Barbara.
Cal Poly kicked off its match against the Gauchos in doubles play, where it put up a fight, but couldn't secure the point.
Garrett Auproux and Axel Damiens beat Cody Rakela and Kristian Prior 6-4 on court three.
UCSB's Nicolas Moreno and Anders Holm tied things back up after beating Tim Tan and Karl Enander on court two 6-2, leaving the doubles point for court one to decide.
Corey Pang and Ben Donovan battled Morgan Mays and Simon Freund to the end, as they pushed the doubles tandem to a tiebreaker, but couldn't hold on, falling 7-6 (7-3).
Down 1-0, Pang tied the score back up, as he beat Mays on court one 6-4, 6-4.
Josh Ortlip fell to Holm on court four 6-4, 6-4. Auproux put up a fight against Freund in his first set, as he pushed him to a tiebreaker, but fell 7-6 (8-6), 6-0 on court three, giving the Gauchos a 3-1 lead.
Donovan pushed Moreno to three sets on court two, but couldn't hold on, as he fell 6-0, 4-6, 6-2, clinching the match for UC Santa Barbara.
This is the second year in a row where the Mustangs fell to the Gauchos in the Big West Conference Finals.
The Mustangs finish their season 18-8 overall and 5-3 in conference play while being ranked top 50 for over two months.
