
Despite Wins by Schilling and Lane, Cal Poly Falls to Northwestern 30-8

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Colton Schilling and Tom Lane earned major decisions Friday night, but the Cal Poly wrestling team, competing in its first dual meet of the 2017-18 season dropped a 30-8 decision to Northwestern for the second straight year.
The Wildcats, a 27-13 winner over CSU Bakersfield earlier in the day, improved to 6-0 on the year with a fall, a technical fall, a major decision and five decisions.
Both Schilling and Lane improved to 4-2 on the year. The pair posted 3-2 marks in the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational two weeks ago.
Schilling blanked Alec McKenna 8-0 at 141 pounds, scoring a takedown and four-point near fall in the first minute of the match and adding an escape and riding time in the final period.
Lane (pictured above) earned a 13-0 major decision over Zach Chakonis at 197 pounds, jumping to a 10-0 lead in the first four minutes thanks to a takedown and a pair of four-point near falls. He added two penalty points and riding time in the third period.
Mustang 285-pounder Spencer Empey nearly pulled off a victory in the final bout. Neither he nor Conan Jennings could score in regulation. In the one-minute sudden victory period, Jennings survived a wild scramble at the end of the mat for a takedown with seven seconds left for the 2-0 overtime win.
The lone fall of the dual was registered by Shayne Oster in 2 minutes, 43 seconds at 157 pounds.
Cal Poly will compete in the Reno Tournament of Champions on Sunday at the Reno Event Center. The Mustangs placed fourth a year ago.
