SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After competing in four tournaments during the first two months of the season, the Cal Poly wrestling team returns to the dual meet portion of its 2017-18 season with a pair of dual meets on the road this week.
Coach Jon Sioredas' Mustangs wrestle at Fresno State on Thursday night and against Penn at Stanford on Sunday afternoon.
Cal Poly and the Bulldogs will meet for the first time in a dual meet since Feb. 7, 2006. Fresno State won that dual 28-19 but Cal Poly owns a 27-17 advantage in the series.
Fresno State dropped wrestling after that season and, after 11 long winters, the program officially returned to Fresno on Nov. 17 when the Bulldogs hosted No. 15 Illinois in front of 6,840 fans at the Save Mart Center. The Illini won 33-10.
Fresno State is 1-5 for the season with a 35-12 win over San Francisco State and losses to Illinois, Nebraska-Kearney, Air Force, CSU Bakersfield and Minnesota. The dual against Air Force was held on the USS Midway in San Diego.
Top Bulldog wrestler is sophomore 149-pounder Khristian Olivas as he placed fifth in the Reno Tournament of Champions and is 14-2 on the year. Bulldog 285-pound freshman AJ Nevills is 16-3.
Cal Poly's lone dual thus far this season resulted in a 30-8 setback against Northwestern on Dec. 15 in Mott Athletics Center. The Mustangs have just two more home duals this year — Jan. 26 against Stanford and Feb. 11 versus Arizona State.
Mustang fans, however, can see the Mustangs in three other events in California, including this weekend's pair of duals. Thursday's match at Fresno State starts at 7 p.m. while the dual against Penn on Sunday inside Stanford's Burnham Pavilion and Ford Center begins at noon.
Cal Poly also wrestles at CSU Bakersfield on Jan. 31.
Penn is 3-2 for the season with wins over Campbell, The Citadel and Hofstra. The Lions fell to Rider 19-15 and Lehigh 41-6 and the Quakers will face Stanford on Sunday at 3 p.m.
Cal Poly and Penn will be meeting in a dual meet for the first time. Top Penn wrestlers include Frank Mattiace (11-2), ranked No. 15 at 197 pounds, and Joe Heyob (7-1), ranked No. 17 at 184. Mattiace placed second at the Midlands Championships last week.
Four Mustang wrestlers have reached the podium in tournaments so far this season.
Sophomore Tom Lane finished second at 197 pounds in the Reno Tournament of Champions and sports an 11-5 record while senior Colton Schilling placed eighth at 141 pounds in the Midlands Championships last week, lifting his mark for the year to 7-5 with five falls.
Sophomore Matt Wilhelm (pictured above) placed sixth at Reno in the 174-pound weight class and is 8-6 for the season while 285-pound senior Spencer Empey also finished sixth at Reno and is 4-7 on the year.
In the dual against Northwestern, Cal Poly's only winners were Schilling and Lane, both by major decision.
