INDIAN WELLS, Calif. – Aiming for its third Big West Tournament Championship in the last five years, the second-seeded Cal Poly men's tennis team was defeated by top-seeded UC Santa Barbara, 4-1 on Saturday morning during the championship match at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. UC Santa Barbara collected its second consecutive championship after beating UC Irvine in the title match a year ago.
The Gauchos took control early, clinching the doubles point behind a victory by Nicolas Moreno and Anders Holm over the Cal Poly duo of Garrett Auproux and Tim Tan, 6-2 from the second position.
After two straight singles wins by UC Santa Barbara, Cal Poly sophomore Axel Damiens defeated Cody Rakela from the fifth position, 6-4 and 6-3 to trim the match deficit to 3-1. UCSB's Holm was able to hold off Cal Poly freshman Josh Ortlip in the fourth position, 6-1, 2-6 and 6-1 to clinch the match and the championship for the Gauchos.
No. 68 Cal Poly finishes the season 14-10 overall. Fall tennis for the Mustangs begins in September 2016. Be sure to follow Cal Poly men's tennis on Twitter (@PolyTennis) during the offseason.
