TUCSON, Ariz. – The Cal Poly beach volleyball team was beaten in a pair of matches on Friday afternoon, suffering a 5-0 loss to TCU and 4-1 defeat to No. 14 Loyola Marymount at the three-day University of Arizona Invitational. In Friday's second match, junior Anna Gorman and freshman Jacqui Martin won the Mustangs' first point of the season with a victory from the fourth pair position against LMU.
To begin Friday's action, the Cal Poly sophomore duo of Casey Carroll (pictured) and Bailey Roach forced a third set from the fifth pair position, ultimately falling 18-21, 21-14 and 15-14 to TCU's Blaire Pickens and Clare Ford.
Cal Poly's No. 1 pairing of sophomores Taylor Nelson and Raeann Greisen nearly forced a third set against TCU's tandem of Michelle McName and Sarita Mikals, but fell in two sets, 21-15 and 21-18.
Cal Poly junior Anna Gorman and freshman Jackie Martin lost in successive sets to TCU's Molly Sheel and Ariah Palter from the fourth pair position, 21-19 and 21-14.
Against LMU, Cal Poly was beaten by the 14th-ranked Lions to fall to 0-3 this season. Gorman and Martin combined on a two-set win over LMU's Nicky Kevorken and Kristen Castellanos, 21-12 and 21-13 for Cal Poly's first pair triumph of the season. Unfortunately, it would be the only point the Mustangs would collect against the Lions.
Cal Poly's No. 1 combo of Nelson and Greisen pushed their matchup with Sascha Dominique and Avery Bush to a third set before falling in three, 21-19, 11-21 and 17-15.
The other three matchups were close for Cal Poly, including freshman Katherine Brouker and sophomore Savannah Niemen, who fell at No. 2 to LMU's Veronica Nederend and Lindsay Carr, 21-18 and 21-19.
The Cal Poly freshman duo of Van Winden and Beilin fell to Jamie Lea and Erin Williams, 21-18 and 21-19 and the Mustang tandem of Roach and Carroll lost a close match to Tatiana Schlange and Sara Kovac in straight sets, 21-15 and 21-18.
Cal Poly (0-3) concludes its four-match trip to Tucson in the Arizona Invitational on Saturday with a single tilt versus Cal slated for 9 a.m.
