AZUSA and WALNUT, Calif. — Cal Poly junior Ashley Windsor finished second out of 167 runners in the women's 1,500 meters at the Bryan Clay Invitational on Friday night, helping to lead the Mustang track and field team at two meets in L.A. County.
At Azusa Pacific's Cougar Stadium, Windsor took more than five seconds off her previous career-best performance, finishing in 4 minutes, 20.34 seconds — which would've represented a new meet record (breaking a three-year-standing 4:21.14) had Annette Melcher, also racing in the top section, not barely won at 4:20.15.
With her time, Windsor moved to No. 8 in school history — the second event this season in which she's clocked into the program's all-time top-10 lists (the 800 being the other, wherein her PR remains 2:08.85). Although results were still being reported around the country, hers would also rank among the Top 25 nationally for 2015, including No. 1 in the Big West Conference.
The men's 1,500 also featured standout times from Cal Poly, as junior Nick Woolf was 21st amid the field of 210, earning a personal-best 3:46.13. Freshman Garrett Migliozzi followed in 38th, at 3:49 flat.
In the last race of the night, the women's 5,000, Mustang sophomore Molly Haar finished seventh among 107 competitors, establishing a new career best of 16:56.02.
Two teammates joined Haar in the top 20: sophomore Michelle Read (in 13th, with a PR of 17:05.58) and freshman Sydney Szabo (in 18th, at 17:09.66). Fellow sophomore Kylie Nishisaka also added a 39th-place time of 17:37.94. Rochelle Kanuho, on behalf of the Northern Arizona Elite club, broke stadium and invitational records by winning in 16:29.11.
Right before that, in the men's 5K, two Cal Poly freshmen raced, as Zachary Wims took 54th out of the 132 on the track, at 15:02.32, ahead of Kyle Aube in 70th at 15:09.70.
Earlier in the day, junior Nick Bultman posted a shot put mark of 51 feet, 8.25 inches on his final attempt, taking eighth place among 47 throwers, edging sophomore teammate Nate Vickers (10th, at 50-7.25). Arnie Sambel, another sophomore, was eighth in the discus, at 164-1, complemented by Vickers in 16th (at 151-8) and senior Josh Hines in 17th (151-0).
A trio of freshmen also competed in the women's discus, as Anola Sanders had a throw of 134-8 (good for 30th), just ahead of Coryne McKenney at 129-11 (38th) and Kiely Osby at 121-10 (44th). Osby also added a 21st-place shot put of 42-8.75.
In the evening, Devon Grove came in 18th among 51 steeplechasers (second in his section), via a season-fastest 9:26.29, followed by fellow freshman Logan Marshall (28th at 9:37.24) and sophomore David Galvez (31st, 9:38.50).
Meanwhile, at the 57th annual Mt. SAC Relays, junior Danielle Bryan came in third place in the collegiate/open division of the high jump, clearing 5 feet, 8.75 inches on her second approach, matching her season-best height so far. Ximena Lizbeth Esquivel, jumping for the Mexican Federation of Athletics, won at 5-10.75.
Also in Hilmer Lodge Stadium, Mustang senior Blake Ahrold broke nine minutes in the steeplechase for the first time since he did so at the NCAA West Regional meet two years ago, finishing 11th in 8:58.61. It ranks No. 2 on the squad this spring, trailing only Woolf's 8:48.91.
Six Mustangs also ran in three separate 5Ks at Mt. SAC.
Al Gamez Jr. led the squad with a PR of 14:19.94, in front of redshirt freshman Swarnjit Boyal (14:23.65), junior Luis Morales (14:26.71), sophomore Dimitri Voytilla (14:31.14), freshman Mikey Giguere (14:35.7) and junior Tyler Huntley (14:45.48).
Additionally, Mustang sophomore Mallory Patino lowered her 400 hurdles PR to 1:01.83 (holding at 10th-best in school history), good for second in the fifth heat and 25th overall.
In the 100-meter dash, sophomore Joey Sanfilippo also got in under his season-best time, finishing in 10.83 seconds. Sophomore Daijah Joe-Smith ran the 100 in 11.90 (wind-aided at 2.6), while junior sprinter Ajah Love clocked a time of 12.12. Love also came back to run the 200 in 24.54.
Sara Van Dyke, a junior, ran the 800 in a 28th-place 2:11.82, ahead of senior Hanna Edwards at 2:13.01 (34th).
Senior Cliff Lekas also was 0.73 back of his career best in the 400, finishing at 48.93 seconds.
The Mustangs will return to action at the Bulldog Invitational hosted by Fresno State (Cal Poly's second trip to Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis) from 1:30 to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 25.
