DAVIS, Calif. – For the first time this season, the 49th-ranked Cal Poly men's tennis team fell during Big West Conference action, as 68th-ranked UC Davis defeated the Mustangs on Friday, 5-2 at the Marya Welch Tennis Center. The defeat snapped a five-match winning streak and handed Cal Poly its first loss since March 22.
Despite the Cal Poly sophomore duo of Ben Donovan and Corey Pang picking up a doubles victory – the pair moved to 15-2 this season – the Aggies collected the doubles point after the Mustang tandem of senior Devin Barber and sophomore Garrett Auproux were ousted by Brett Bacharach and Bryce McKelvie, 6-1 at No. 2 and UCD's Tommy Lam and James Wade downed Cal Poly's freshman combination of Karl Enander and Lucas Lesoeur, 6-3 in the third spot.
Donovan and Pang beat the duo of Alec Adamson and Adam Levie, 6-2, producing their fifth straight doubles win together.
After UC Davis grabbed the doubles point, the Aggies did not relinquish the match momentum, snatching four of the six singles matchups to claim victory. Cal Poly's Donovan (pictured), though, continued his singles success, after a comeback, three-set decision (2-6, 7-6, 6-2) over Adamson in the first position. Donovan moved to 14-6 in the No. 1 spot and 19-11 overall this season.
Pang won his fifth consecutive singles match with a three-set (6-3, 2-6, 6-2) win over Bacharach at No. 3, providing the second Mustang point of the match. UC Davis, though, would not concede another point against Cal Poly.
The Mustangs' Auproux felt defeat for only the second time over his last 11 matches, with a straight-set (6-4, 6-1) loss to Wade at No. 2. Auproux was defeated for only the fifth time at the second position and is now 13-5 overall this season.
Cal Poly senior Naveen Beasley had his five-match winning streak halted after forcing a third set with Everett Maltby in the fifth position, only to fall in three sets (6-4, 4-6, 7-6).
Cal Poly (14-8, 3-1) wraps up the conference season with another difficult road matchup at 2 p.m. against Blue-Green rival UC Santa Barbara next Saturday, April 18.
