CLOVIS, Calif. — At an early-season tune-up for the 33rd annual Cal Poly/ShareSLO Invitational in San Luis Obispo on Saturday, the Mustang track and field team won five events at the Fresno State Twilight Meet in windy Veterans Memorial Stadium on Tuesday evening, as the men and women both beat San Jose State and CSU Bakersfield, with their lone losses coming to the host.
A trio of Cal Poly sophomores is now 2-for-2 in terms of picking up wins so far, as all three followed the Big West Double Dual at UC Riverside on March 14 by again earning first-place points Tuesday:
- Ben Hartinger, who claimed the 110-meter hurdles in 14.50 seconds (five-hundredths off his collegiate best), edging Fresno State junior Keane Bland's 14.55 and sophomore teammate Kevin Staniszewski's third-place 14.77
- Arnie Sambel, who took the shot put with a mark of 53 feet, 4.25 inches
- Daijah Joe-Smith, who clocked a time of 11.99 in the 100-meter dash, ahead of Mustang junior Mishe' Scott's runner-up 12.16, which equaled her PR from two years ago (Scott came back to also place second in the long jump, at 17-8.75)
Additionally, two more Cal Poly sophomores posted wins in personal-best fashion: Allie Sulaitis, who ran a 4:48.14 in the 1,500, and Brad Beekman, who cleared 16-0.75 in the pole vault.
Second-place showings were had by sophomores Nate Vickers (via a PR of 164-3 in the discus) and Joey Sanfilippo (10.87 in the 100), as well as freshmen Liam Martinez (50.46 in the 400), Danielle Taylor (5-5 in the high jump) and Kiely Osby (44 feet even in the shot put).
The Bulldogs swept, although Cal Poly finished 2-1 in each column, as the women won 62-35 over the Roadrunners and 58-25 versus the Spartans (with the only loss coming 65-46); the men, meanwhile, prevailed 58-28 against CSUB and then via a shutout to top SJSU, 61-0 (next to the lone 53-43 defeat).

A total of 83 Mustangs are scheduled to compete at their home invitational beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday. Former Cal Poly All-Americans Maggie Vessey (in the 800), Jasmine Pickett (triple jump) and John Prader (pole vault) are among those scheduled to also compete on an individual basis at the meet, which is free to the public.
