WACO, Texas – Three Baylor pitchers combined on a seven-hit shutout as the Bears completed a season-opening three-game baseball series sweep against Cal Poly with a 6-0 victory Sunday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark.
Shut out for just the second time since 2013, Cal Poly was swept in a series of three games or more for the first time since the end of the 2011 campaign when Bakersfield won all three games against the Mustangs.
Cal Poly wasted three scoring opportunities in the first four innings and couldn't muster much offense the rest of the way, falling to 0-3 for the first time since losing its first six games of the 2011 season.
The Mustangs had runners at second and third with one out in the first inning, first and third with one out in the third frame and Peter Van Gansen doubled with one out in the fourth. Each time, Baylor turned Cal Poly away.
Baylor scored twice in the second inning on a two-run double by West Tunnell, added three more in the third on an RBI triple by Adam Toth, a run-scoring single by Duncan Wendel and a sacrifice fly by Jonathan Ducoff and added its final run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Tunnell.
Baylor starter Theron Kay (1-0), in his first game in a Baylor uniform, pitched four innings for the win, allowing five hits and striking out two. Troy Montemayor and Daniel Castano combined with Kay for the shutout.
For the third time in as many games, the starting pitcher for Cal Poly could not reach the fifth inning. Casey Bloomquist pitched four innings Friday and Slater Lee tossed two frames Saturday. Both were not involved in decisions as Cal Poly rallied to tie or take the lead in both contests.
Sophomore right-hander Justin Calomeni pitched just three innings Sunday and suffered the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) and six hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Jarred Zill, Nick Suniga, Michael Gomez and Erich Uelmen also pitched for Cal Poly.
The Mustangs' seven-hit attack included two singles by senior center fielder Jordan Ellis and a single and double by Van Gansen (pictured above).
Baylor also collected seven hits, two each by Toth and Wendel.
Cal Poly will play its fourth straight road game Tuesday at Fresno State before playing its home opener Friday night with the first of three games against Grand Canyon at 6 p.m. in Baggett Stadium.
