FRESNO, Calif. – Cal Poly erupted for four runs in the seventh inning to break open a 1-0 contest and went on to beat previously unbeaten Fresno State 7-6 in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday night at Pete Beiden Field.
In outhitting the Bulldogs 16-8, Coach Larry Lee's Mustangs, swept by Baylor over the weekend in Waco, Texas, earned their first win of the season, improving to 1-3. Fresno State, coming off a weekend series sweep over UC Irvine, fell to 3-1.
Three freshman pitchers for Cal Poly combined to limit Fresno State to four harmless singles in seven scoreless innings. The Bulldogs finally broke through for three runs in the eighth before senior southpaw Taylor Chris secured two outs in the eighth and senior right-hander Danny Zandona struck out three in the ninth for his first save.
Starter Andrew Bernstein (1-0) struck out four and allowed two hits in 5 1/3 innings while Michael Gomez struck out two in one inning of work. Kyle Smith worked one scoreless frame with one strikeout.
The loss went to Dominic Topoozian (0-1), the third of seven Fresno State pitchers used in the game.
Mustang senior center fielder Jordan Ellis (pictured above), held hitless in the first two games of the season, singled twice Sunday at Baylor and added three more singles Tuesday night, driving in one run. Junior shortstop Peter Van Gansen, who doubled twice, and sophomore catcher Jake Lesinski, who had one double, also contributed three hits.
Junior first baseman Brian Mundell, senior right fielder Zack Zehner and sophomore designated hitter Kevin Morgan all collected two hits for Cal Poly.
Mundell knocked in two runs with a seventh-inning single and an eighth-inning double while Van Gansen doubled to tally the first run of the game in the fourth inning. Morgan doubled in a run in the seventh.
Fresno State's eight hits included two singles by first baseman Joe Prior, knocking in two runs in the ninth. Center fielder Brody Russell knocked in two runs with a single in the eighth inning and third baseman Manny Argomaniz had a single and an RBI groundout.
Cal Poly, which played its first four games on the road, opens the home portion of its 2015 schedule Friday night with the first of three games against Grand Canyon (4-0). First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
The Antelopes, in their second Division I season, defeated UNLV 7-0 Tuesday night after winning each of their three games in the GCU Classic over the weekend in Phoenix, including a 30-7 drubbing of Bradley on Sunday.
