BROOKINGS, S.D. – Backup quarterback Zach Lujan, making his first collegiate start, threw three touchdown passes and senior running back Zach Zenner recorded his 23rd career 100-yard game as No. 11/12 South Dakota State defeated Cal Poly 44-18 in a non-conference football game Saturday night at Coughlin-Alumni Stadium.
Zenner rushed for 193 yards on 30 carries and scored once on a 15-yard run for South Dakota State (1-1).
Cal Poly, which had won the last three meetings against the Jackrabbits, fell to 0-2.
Mustang senior linebacker Nick Dzubnar made a career-high 19 tackles and junior quarterback Chris Brown (pictured at right) passed for a career-high 202 yards, but South Dakota State compiled 502 yards in total offense for its first win over the Mustangs since 2007.
Cal Poly still leads the series, 5-3.
Cal Poly led only once at 12-10 after Brown ran seven yards for one touchdown and, with 4:29 left in the second period, Kori Garcia ran nine yards for the Mustangs' second score.
Cal Poly also got the ball to start the third period, but was forced to punt after collecting a pair of first downs and South Dakota State began to pull away with an 81-yard drive capped by Jake Wieneke's 11-yard touchdown pass from Lujan.
Roland Jackson caught an 89-yard pass from Brown midway through the final period and Brown plunged one yard for Cal Poly's final touchdown of the game.
Brown rushed for 87 yards on 20 carries and completed 16 of 21 passes for 202 yards. His favorite target was fullback Brandon Howe with four catches for 29 yards. Garcia rushed for 86 yards on 17 carries.
Lujan completed 12 of 20 passes for 184 yards. He replaced three-year starter Austin Sumner, who broke three bones in a foot last week at Missouri. Sumner passed for 2,999 yards as a junior a year ago.
Trevor Wesley and Jason Schneider each caught three passes for South Dakota State.
Dave Douglas earned his first career interception for Cal Poly while Jordan Williams and Cameron Ontko each recorded eight tackles. First Mustang sack of the season was recorded by sophomore defensive end Josh Letuligasenoa.
Cal Poly has a bye next week and will play its home opener on Saturday, Sept. 20, against Portland State, a non-conference contest at 6:05 p.m. in Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
